Associate Editor, News & Culture

Apartment Therapy is looking for an Associate Editor, News & Culture to join our team. We are seeking someone who, under the direction of the News and Culture editor and senior editorial management, can develop news and culture content in the voice, style, and sensibility of Apartment Therapy. Writing and editing quick hits and understanding traffic patterns is a must, but we also want someone who knows how to sniff out interesting stories that matter—and tell them in ways that are full of voice, authority, and humor. We are interested in telling stories about how people live today, whether that’s through the lens of design trends, pop culture influence, inspiring people, new-age living arrangements, and beyond.

Accountabilities:

  • Identify, pitch, and write engaging, socially-optimized news and culture content as well as accept assignments
  • Write additional types of content for other verticals as needed
  • Help edit freelancer stories
  • Help conceive long-lead news and culture stories for the editorial calendar
  • Deliver completed content on schedule for publication on our site and distribution on our social channels
  • Work with art and video teams as needed to aid in the production of news and culture or other editorial content
  • Refresh, repackage, and optimize archival content
  • Monitor traffic and help drive growth to news & culture vertical
  • Attend events as needed
  • Provide vacation coverage for news & culture editor
  • Fill in for weekend and holiday news and culture coverage as needed
  • Work on other site special projects outside of news as needed

Experience/Skills:

  • 2-3 years experience in digital media or publishing with a focus on News & Culture content a plus
  • Strong, distinctive voice, with an ability to write for Apartment Therapy’s audience across platforms
  • An astute awareness and of internet trends, memes, popular culture, and the cultural zeitgeist with an ability to apply the Apartment Therapy lens to it
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Experience in editing stories for accuracy and voice
  • Exposure to analytics tools such as Parse.ly and a willingness to learn more
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and to quickly adjust strategy and execution in the face of new information

Education:

  • Four-year college degree
